Town Services
Gouverneur Fire Department is a 60 Member Volunteer Fire Department, which is comprised of 3 Fire Companies; Hose Company 1, Hose Company 2, & Rescue Hook and Ladder Company. Each of these companies consists of 20 Members. There are 2 wardens per company along with a Past Chief that takes care of the Department business. There is also an active Exempt Organization.
Gouverneur Volunteer Rescue Squad provides a valued service to the southern part of St. Lawrence County. The organization is made up of a combination of paid and volunteer members to provide an advanced level of care to the greater Gouverneur Area 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Along with responding to 911 emergency calls, the rescue squad also does inter-facility ambulance transfers for patients that need medical services unavailable to them at Gouverneur Hospital and Clifton Fine hospital. They also provide non-emergency wheelchair and stretcher transportation in DOT compliant vans for patients seeking transportation to doctors’ appointments and other special engagements. The Gouverneur Police Department provides for public safety within the village of Gouverneur and answers calls for police, rescue and fire department. The New York State Police and the St. Lawrence County Sheriff answer calls for the town of Gouverneur and surrounding areas. Enhanced 911 is provided for all residents of St. Lawrence County. The Enhanced 911 system allows a call to be locked into police headquarters and automatically provides an address until assistance arrives.

Town of Gouverneur Utilities

Water. The Town of Gouverneur Water System supplies water to town residents utilizing an ultramodern facility. Residents outside of town use their own individual private wells or central water systems available at some of the larger properties. Town and Village sanitation systems. The Gouverneur Sanitation District provides for disposal of wastewater in Gouverneur. Outlying areas use private septic systems.
Electric Service. Electric power is provided throughout the County by Niagara Mohawk, Division of National Grid. Numerous independent firms provide propane service to town and outlying residents.
Natural Gas. Natural Gas Service is provided throughout the Village of Gouverneur by St. Lawrence Gas.
Trash Disposal. A private company may be hired to remove residential or commercial trash. Individuals may haul their own trash to St. Lawrence County waste disposal site, a short distance from town,
Communication Services. Service is provided by Verizon. Phone service may be installed by calling 890-7100. Verizon offers numerous communication services which include the LifeLine service. Time Warner offers Cable TV & Internet Service. Gouverneur has access to the Development Authority of the North Country's Fiber Optic loop.
